Here are some tips for success as an international student in America. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a work authorization for F-1 international students that allows participation in paid off-campus internships integral to their degree program. To be eligible for CPT, students must maintain valid F-1 status, enroll full-time (with exceptions during their final semester), and have been in F-1 status for at least one academic year, unless they meet specific conditions. Students must secure a specific job offer related to their major and register for an internship course during the semester they wish to pursue CPT. They can work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during the fall and spring semesters and full-time during the summer session. In their final semester, students may work full-time with departmental approval while remaining enrolled part-time. CPT authorization is granted on a semester basis and does not impact a student's eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation unless they have accumulated over 12 months of full-time CPT. The application process involves obtaining a job offer, registering for required courses, completing the CPT I-20 Request Form, and securing necessary approvals. Adherence to regulations is crucial to maintain F-1 status and pursue future opportunities.

The Cap-Gap Extension is an automatic extension of F-1 status and work authorization past the EAD End Date, for students transitioning to an H-1B work visa.

On-campus employment for F-1/J-1 international students is limited to 20 hours a week (part-time) during the fall and spring semesters and 40 hours a week (full-time) during summer and university breaks.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of work authorization that allows F-1 international students to participate in paid off-campus academic internships during their degree program. The purpose of CPT is academic, not just for employment purposes, and the internship must be considered an integral part of a student’s degree program.
